Which US applications ask for a police certificate, and how long yours stays valid.
Do you need a police clearance certificate for a US visa?
If you are applying for a US immigrant visa and you are 16 or older, you will be asked for a South African police certificate if you are a South African citizen who has lived here for more than 6 months at any time, if you live in South Africa now and have done for more than 6 months, or if you lived here for 12 months or more after turning 16. For South Africa, that is the police clearance certificate issued by the South African Police Service.
For US immigration purposes, a police certificate expires after 2 years, unless it came from a country you previously lived in and you have not returned there since the certificate was issued.
You upload a scan during the document stage, but you must bring the original certificate to your interview. SAPS does not email certificates.

Which US visas ask for a police certificate
Police certificates are part of the immigrant visa process, the route to living permanently in the United States, and of the fiancé(e) (K) visa process. That includes cases such as:
- Family-based immigrant visas, where a relative in the US sponsors you
- Employment-based immigrant visas
- Diversity Visa programme selectees
- Fiancé(e) (K) visas
The police certificate is one of the civil documents the US Department of State asks each applicant to collect before the visa interview. A consular officer can also ask applicants for other visa types for one.
Who needs a South African police certificate for a US visa
The Department of State asks for police certificates from every applicant aged 16 or older. That means a separate certificate for each family member in that age group, not one for the household.
You are asked for a certificate from:
- Your country of nationality, if you lived there for more than 6 months at any time
- The country you live in now, if you have lived there for more than 6 months
- Any other country where you lived for 12 months or more after turning 16
- Any country where you were arrested, however long you were there
The nationality rule is the one that catches South Africans abroad. A South African citizen living in another country usually still needs a South African certificate, as well as one from the country they live in now.
How long a South African police certificate is valid for the US

That second rule matters for South Africans who have already left. If South Africa is a country you used to live in, and you have not returned there at all since your certificate was issued, it does not expire for US purposes. A visit back can change that.
If you are still in South Africa, time the certificate against your interview. A US immigrant visa case can take a long time to move from petition to interview, and a certificate obtained too early can expire before you are called.
Applying for a South African police certificate from outside South Africa
Some applicants are living outside South Africa when the certificate is needed, and the nationality rule means they often still need it.
Applying from abroad is different from applying at home:
- Fingerprints are taken in the country you are in, on that country’s official forms or on the SAPS form where available, and they must be originals.
- The application still has to reach the Criminal Record Centre in Pretoria, the only office that issues the certificate.
- SAPS does not return applications sent from abroad or email certificates. A finished certificate is handed to a person you nominate or to a courier.
- Certificates not collected within 3 months of being finalised are destroyed.
An overseas application that stalls at any one of those points can cost weeks against an interview date that does not move.
Common police certificate mistakes on US visa applications
Getting the certificate too early. Obtained while you are still living in South Africa, a certificate expires after 2 years for US purposes. If the interview date moves, the certificate can expire first.
One certificate for the whole family. Each applicant aged 16 or over needs their own.
Forgetting other countries. If you lived somewhere else for 12 months or more after turning 16, the South African certificate alone will not complete your file.
Arriving without the original. A scan is uploaded during the document stage, but the original certificate has to be brought to the interview.
