How long is a police clearance certificate valid?

SAPS does not publish a validity period for a South African police clearance certificate. The certificate records whether any criminal convictions were recorded against you on the date it was issued. DIRCO’s legalisation guidance treats a certificate as valid for 6 months from the date of issue.

Beyond that, how long it stays usable is decided by whoever you give it to. For a UK Skilled Worker visa in certain health, education and social care roles, and for Canadian permanent residence, it generally needs to be issued within 6 months of your application. Australia accepts certificates issued in the 12 months before you apply. The USA treats it as expiring after 2 years. DIRCO will not legalise one that is older than 6 months.

If your certificate needs an apostille and a foreign authority also sets a time limit, both limits apply, and each is measured on a different date: DIRCO’s when you submit for legalisation, the foreign authority’s when you apply.

These rules change, and some depend on your circumstances. Treat the table as a starting point and confirm the requirement for your own application.

Why “the country you live in now” matters

Several of these rules treat a certificate differently depending on whether you still live in South Africa or have already left.

  • UK: for a country you have left, the certificate must have been issued within the 6 months before your stay there ended.
  • USA: a certificate from a country you have left does not expire, provided you have not returned there since it was issued. A visit back ends that.
  • Canada: for a country you have left, the certificate must have been issued after the last time you stayed there for 6 months in a row or longer.

In plain terms: for the UK and the USA, a South African certificate obtained shortly before you emigrated can remain usable long after it would have gone out of date for someone still living here. Canada’s rule is stricter: the certificate must be issued after your last stay of 6 months or more ended. Whether yours works depends on your dates.

The timing gap: where applications go wrong

A common and expensive mistake is getting a certificate too early.

Too early for the destination. A certificate obtained while you are still living in South Africa, months before a UK or Canadian application, can be out of date the day you apply.

Too early for DIRCO. If the certificate needs an apostille or authentication, DIRCO will not accept it once it is older than 6 months. For a Spanish visa, the consulate’s own window is usually shorter still.

Too early for a process that moves. Visa timelines slip. A US immigrant visa interview that moves back can push a certificate past its 2 year limit, and Canada states that it may ask for updated police certificates while an application is being processed.

Each of those means a second application, a second SAPS fee and a second wait.

How long it takes to get a new certificate

SAPS currently reports a backlog.

Through Police Clear, the standard turnaround is 5 to 7 business days, with 3 to 5 and 1 to 3 business day options available at a higher price, and approximately 80% of cases are completed sooner than quoted.

When a certificate has to land inside a 3 or 6 month window, the ability to time it accurately is worth more than getting it early.

Timing a police clearance for a visa deadline

We collect, we expedite, and we deliver. Applications are submitted directly to the Criminal Record Centre in Pretoria and handled end to end, for applicants in South Africa and abroad.

No need to start months early. With a standard turnaround of 5 to 7 business days, and 3 to 5 or 1 to 3 business day options, the certificate can be applied for close to the date you need it. Confirm your window with the authority receiving the certificate.
