What is an abridged birth certificate?

It is the shorter Home Affairs birth certificate, containing the essential details of the individual. It does not carry the full particulars of both parents.

Abridged or unabridged: which do you need?

  • Abridged: general identification, school registrations and local administrative requirements
  • Unabridged: where full parental details are needed, including visas, emigration and international travel involving a minor

If the certificate is going abroad, you will usually need the unabridged birth certificate.
